(All that you need to know about single donor hair……includes queries about making #613)
Today we will discuss about single donor hair and mixed donor hair? Who should buy single donor hair and who should buy mixed donor hair? My point is not to downgrade any hair, but to understand the technicalities so that you know what you are buying. Let me start from the beginning, How they are made-
There is a lot of hype about raw hair. Now let me ask you a question, why do you actually need a raw hair? The answer is very simple – “Raw hair has cuticles”.
And why do you need cuticles in hair?
- cuticles can hold your style perfectly,
- cuticle can hold the colour that you apply on your hair,
- having cuticles give the hair a natural long life,
- having cuticles make the hair feel soft and good with little maintenance only…….
anyone would like to add more points here, you are welcome.
Now, we all know that these raw hairs are actually obtained from a donor. It is cut straight off from her head and tied with a rubber band immediately so that the cuticles (roots and tips) are maintained in the same direction. Most of us are aware up to this.
BUT WHAT IF THE DONOR FROM WHOM THE HAIR WAS COLLECTED IS A REGULAR VISITOR OF BEAUTY PARLOUR AND HAD A PRE-DYED HAIR IN HER HEAD?
This hair is no more virgin, but it has full cuticles in them. Do we buy raw hair only to get the cuticles or to get the natural colours also. Of course both. But why do we need natural colours? That is because, pre-dyed hair is difficult to bleach or colour again. So if we want to bleach or colour our hair to our perfect shade, we need the hair to be in its natural colour from the donors head itself.
BUT IS THAT ENOUGH?
Now let me give you another situation where the donor’s hair was not pre-dyed but in natural black hair in her head. (In eastern part of the globe, generally women have natural black and natural brown hair. Blonde is not a natural color in this part. Blonde is generally obtained by bleaching method). This natural black hair is mixed with another donor’s hair who had natural brown hair. With perfect blending, visually it will look same. But when you bleach them, will they have equal shades? NO…If you have little knowledge about hair bleaching and colouring, you know that the colour levels of brown hair strands will be lifted fasted than the black hair strands. And it will be very difficult to obtain a uniform shade.
WHAT IS A MIXED DONOR REMY HAIR –
They are collected from various donors. They are not always full head hair. Few may have donated 50 grams, few may have donated 100 grams or few may have donated full head. In the other hand, Few may have black hair, few brown or few may have pre-dyed hair. Few may have straight hair and few may have wavy. Although their cuticles are still aligned in the same direction (roots and tips) and may have cuticle intact, but their colors and textures are mixed together. Few good manufacturers, may not mix the pre-dyed hair in the same lot, but generally they are mixed all together. A mixed donor hair bundle is made of multiple donors. Although they are blended well to give a uniform look but while coloring / bleaching the hair it may not give a uniform shade.
WHAT IS A SINGLE DONOR REMY HAIR –
This is always a full head hair obtained from individual donor. You may be shocked to hear that single donor hair is also mixed with other donor’s hair. A single donor hair is obtained from individual donors but not sold as single donor. Let me explain you here, lets say a weft needs 100 grams of hair. It is not necessary that the donor will have exactly 100 grams of hair in her head. She might have 150 grams of hair. A bundle is made with 100 grams and the rest 50 grams is mixed with another donor who is having the same texture and same color. A bundle of single donor hair it is mostly from one donor, few bundles are compiled with other donor’s hair for the sake of production of various hair products ( example wigs or hair wefts ), but that is limited to two or three donor.
WHO SHOULD BUY SINGLE DONOR HAIR –
If you think you or your customers need a perfect shade ( especially the palest blondes like #613 or #60 ) while bleaching or coloring, then single donor hair is a better option. If you are owning a parlor, and you have colored your client’s hair live in front of her and you don’t want any mess, you should go for single donor hair. If you are looking for a perfect #613 or a platinum blonde colour, you should opt for single donor hair.
DISADVANTAGE –
In a donor hair, a lot cannot be changed when it comes to the thickness at the bottom. The thickness of the bottom can be slightly changed but mostly it is sold as it is received from the donor. The thickness at the bottom is standard ( 10 a grade, according to the grading standards of most companies )
WHO SHOULD BUY MIXED DONOR –
Mixed donor hair can also be bleached and coloured, but whether you will get the perfect desired shade is a matter of chance. So if perfect hair shade is not your primary goal, you can always go for mixed donor hair. After all, they are sold bit cheaper than single donor hair.
ADVANTAGE –
Mixed donor hair can be customized and made according to a desired grade and price can be made further cheaper. The grading standards of different company varies. Grading is defined mainly by the ratio of the longest hair in a bundle. A higher grade bundle is more costly and has more percentage of longest hair and thus the end of the bundle looks thicker. lower the grade, cheaper it is with more percentage of short hair mixed inside and thus the end of the bundle becomes thinner.
What is Single Donor Hair?
What is donor hair?
Single donor hair is a bundle of hair that is cut only from one donor.
Does hair grow back donor area?
Well, the short answer would be ‘no’. Since entire hair follicles and the surrounding cells are completely removed from beneath the scalp surface, hair re-growth in the donor site is not at all possible.
Great content! Super high-quality! Keep it up! 🙂
